The rhythm of life in New Horizons, where activities are tied to the real-world clock and seasons, echoes the deliberate pace of Unpacking, further bridging the experience between these two games. Whatever your opinion on the topic which I will not spoil or discuss, calling your product a "zen game" while intentionally creating content that will spark controversy, makes you a bit of a liar.Ĭonsidering the limited to nonexistent re-playability and limited amount of content - even with how high quality it is, the game is overpriced and I'd not recommend buying it unless it's about 50% off at least. Much like Unpacking, its a game about curating your space to reflect your personality. ![]() Fortunately, there aren't many such things.įurthermore, the devs decided to make a very specific statement about halfway into the game, and it also feels a bit shoehorned and out of nowhere, so if you are averse to topics regarding certain lifestyles, you should probably avoid this game. Some of them are pretty non-descript, others are things that not everyone uses and the devs kinda expect that you do, which can lead to unnecessary annoyance or frustration. ![]() For a self described "zen game", some of the item placement requirements are a bit stringent and there is not tips, or anything of the sort, and if you don't know all of the items present, you will sometimes struggle. Unfortunately, it is not completely without blemishes. It is a great title to just lose a couple hours in when you need to relax, listen to some great instrumentals, and click at couple things to take your mind off of more stressful stuff. Of course, one could argue that the game is limited in its scope, but in this case, it is definitely quality over quantity. The pixel art in this game is one of the best I have seen. You notice, as with each moving, some items disappear, others are added, some of them stay but their condition changes, etc. It's a beautiful game telling a story of a life, or part of it at least, through items and locations. If you are looking for a short but well put together game than this will do it for you. Unpacking is a well put together indie game from a small developer and I am so impress it made want to fold my socks and put my clothes away that were lying on my floor for 2 weeks. To figuring it all out at the end and starting a life with her partner. The chracters life is told in such a way from trying to find herself and what she wants to do with her life. From seeing the different rooms to unpack you tell the character is getting older to levels where she finally meets a partner and creates a life together really is a beautifull thing to see and play The story is really nothing special but what makes me impress is that every object you unpack tells the story. The objects that you unpack really brought nostalgia back to me like unboxing a PS2 or Gamecube really shows the little deatils that can put a smile on someones face. The vibrant colours through out each level really brought the game to life. ![]() I smiled when I reached into a box and grabbed a familiar stuffed pig out of a box, one that clearly still had value to the person who packed it.Unpacking is a Indie game that makes chores fun a game that makes one of the boring jobs fun. You can see how their interests evolved, with higher quality art materials rather than crayons. You get to see which stuffed animals and toys remain as sentimental keepsakes, and which ones didn’t. It also gives you time to reflect on every item that comes out of the box, and what that says about the person whose possessions you’re now unpacking and sorting for the second time. ![]() This is where the one-at-a-time pull works so well, as every time you reach into the box, there’s a surprise that might up-end your carefully laid plans. Clothes need to be neatly sorted and put away, and I laughed out loud when I realized I’d have to rearrange the entire closet after finding more clothes in another box. And you can tell there wasn’t practice in the packing, as random items like a toothbrush or a keyboard end up in boxes where they shouldn’t have been. There’s a bathroom and kitchen to stock up, things the kid never had to care about.
